(TSX / STATS) -- Former Carolina Hurricanes forward Erik Cole signed a ceremonial one-day contract with the team and announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Cole, who hasn't played in the NHL in two seasons, immediately was named a team ambassador by Hurricanes president Don Waddell.

The 38-year-old Cole, who helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup in 2006, played 8 1/2 of his 13 NHL seasons with the Hurricanes.

Cole collected 265 goals and 267 assists in 892 career games since being selected by Carolina in the third round of the 1998 draft. He also played for the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings.
