Suns sign G James to one-year deal
(TSX / STATS) -- The Phoenix Suns signed guard Mike James to a standard NBA contract on Thursday after his two-way deal with the team expired Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old James signed a one-year deal and will be a restricted free agent following the season.
Phoenix released forward Derrick Jones Jr. to create the roster opening.
James has been a surprise for the Suns after playing overseas the previous five seasons. He is averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds and his value will be even higher the rest of the month with star shooting guard Devin Booker out for two to three weeks due to a groin injury.
James played college basketball at Lamar and went undrafted in 2012.
Jones averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 38 games with the Suns over the past two seasons. He played in just six games this season, averaging 1.5 points and 0.7 rebounds.
