Chandimal hits 119 as WIndies dismisses Sri Lanka for 253
GROS ISLET, St. Lucia (AP) Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal held out on the opening day of the second test against West Indies on Thursday with an undefeated 119 but ran out of partners as his team was dismissed for 253.
In reply, West Indies survived two overs to go to stumps at 2-0 in its first innings with Kraigg Brathwaite (2) and Devon Smith at the crease in the three-test series.
The hosts dominated the opening session with Sri Lanka 79-3 at lunch, and Chandimal on 8. Sri Lanka revived to reach 157-5 at tea with Chandimal on 53 at Gros Islet.
Right-arm pacers Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach inflicted nearly all the damage for West Indies, with nine wickets between them after Sri Lanka won the toss and judged the wicket to be batting-friendly.
Gabriel ended on 5-59 off 16 overs and Roach took 4-49 off 18 overs.
Chandimal, who hit 10 fours and a six in his 11th test century, shared a 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Kusal Mendis, who was out for 45 after being caught by wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off a delivery from medium-fast Jason Holder.
West Indies won the first test at Port of Spain by 226 runs. The teams will play a third test, a day-night encounter, beginning June 23 at Bridgetown, Barbados.
