Andre Ward leaps atop super middleweight division

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Andre Ward left Oracle Arena hoping for just a normal Sunday in the Oakland suburbs, including plenty of church and family time with his wife and children.

Yet he also realizes life will never be the same after what he did to WBA champion Mikkel Kessler on Saturday night in a victory that turned the super middleweight division on its head.

"I think I'm the most underestimated fighter in the game," Ward said, before adding quickly: "I don't know about after tonight."

Ward claims Kessler's WBA title, fight stopped

OAKLAND, California (AP) American Andre Ward claimed the WBA super middleweight title from Denmark's Mikkel Kessler on Saturday in a bout that had to be stopped early, leaving the ex-champion's camp complaining of dirty tactics.

Ward (21-0, 13 KOs) added his first world championship belt to his Olympic gold medal with an upset victory in his hometown. (MORE)

KIEL, Germany (AP) Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Italian veteran Giacobbe Fragomeni on Saturday.

KIEL, Germany (AP) Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Giacobbe Fragomeni on Saturday night.

Erdei vacated the WBO light-heavyweight title to fight at cruiserweight for the first time, and managed to do just enough against the 40-year-old Italian. Two judges had it 115-113 for Erdei, while the third scored it 114-114. (MORE)
